Een barista worden. Hoe doe je dat?

De laatste jaren is koffie een trendy product geworden, helemaal in espresso koffiebars. De vraag naar barista’s neemt toe en tegelijkertijd neemt de interesse toe om barista te worden. In dit artikel lichten we toe hoe je een barista kunt worden, aan welke voorwaarden je moet voldoen en welke trainingen je moet volgen om een goede barista te worden.

Barista iets voor jou?

In het verleden zagen we alleen studenten die het vak barista beoefenden. Maar tegenwoordig zie je volwassenen met een diepgaande interesse voor koffie achter de espressomachine staan. In de meeste gevallen roosteren ze de koffiebonen ook zelf en proberen ze de beste koffie te zetten. De consumenten zijn steeds meer bereid om veel geld voor een bakje koffie neer te leggen. In het verleden betaalde je misschien € 1,50 voor een bakje koffie, terwijl tegenwoordig 3 – 4 euro geen uitzondering is.

Je wordt barista omdat je geïnteresseerd bent in koffie en graag meer wilt leren over koffie. Het zetten van een goede bak koffie is moeilijker dan je denkt. Er zijn ontzettend veel factoren die invloed uitoefenen op de uiteindelijke smaak van de koffie. Voordat je aan allerlei koffie trainingen en workshops deelneemt, is het verstandig om na te gaan of het beroep echt iets voor je is. Je zult nooit rijk worden als barista (mits je jouw eigen café opent), dus moet het echt iets zijn wat je leuk vindt om te doen.

Er zijn veel werknemers in de koffiewereld die als barista begonnen zijn. Het vormt een goede basis wanneer je graag een carrière wilt maken in de koffiewereld. Het is handig om te weten waar een barista tegen aan loopt en hoe je lekkere koffie zet mocht je iets in de koffiewereld willen gaan doen.

De voorwaarden waar je aan moet voldoen hangen voornamelijk van de werkgever af. Wanneer je bij een speciality koffiezaak werkt, wordt er meer van je verwacht dan wanneer je bij een cafe werkt dat naast koffie ook andere dranken plus eten serveert. Bij speciality koffiezaken zal je gepassioneerd moeten zijn over koffie en in de intentie hebben om altijd jouw kennis over koffie uit te breiden.

Daarnaast zullen een aantal koffiezaken alleen barista’s aannemen die werkervaring hebben of een SCA diploma hebben. SCA staat voor speciality coffee association en is een overkoepelende organisatie die de kwaliteit van de koffie wil waarborgen door barista’s op de juiste manier op te leiden. Na het volgen van een barista skills foundation cursus ontvang je een diploma die overal ter wereld erkend wordt.

De SCA cursussen kunnen behoorlijk duur zijn, zeker wanneer je nog niet helemaal zeker weet of de koffiewereld iets voor jou is. In dit geval is het wellicht een beter idee om met een barista workshop te beginnen. Tijdens een barista workshop maak je kennis met de facetten van het vak en kom je erachter of het iets voor je is. Je leert hoe de espressomachine werkt, hoe je bepaalde handbrew zetmethoden kunt uitvoeren en hoe je de perfecte espresso zet.
